Weight Loss Products for Obesity

Obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or greater. Obesity is associated with the leading cause of death from development of chronic conditions such as type II diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and hypertension. The CDC has officially classified obesity as a serious chronic medical disease. The prevalence of obesity in the United States of America continues to rise. Implementation of weight loss products is sometimes needed to further assist individuals in achieving a healthier lifestyle. Weight loss products are not a substitute for incorporating healthy diets and exercise. Maintaining a healthy diet and participation in physical exercise activities is key to successfully attaining your weight loss goals while using weight loss products. 

• Semaglutide (Brand names- Wegovy, Ozempic) MOST EFFECTIVE: increases the body's production of insulin, inhibits glucagon and decreases appetite by creating a feeling of "fullness". 

Exclusionary Criteria for Semaglutide includes family or personal history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, allergies/hypersensitivity to GLP-1, use of antipsychotics, BMI less than 30-27 without at least 1 related weight-induced comorbidity such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes mellitus.

• Bupropion/Naltrexone (Brand name- Contrave):  stimulates neurochemical effects within the hypothalamus and mesolimbic circuit of the brain. These effects specifically target reduction of hunger and food cravings leading to weight loss. 

• Oxytocin: hormone produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the pituitary gland. When given in medication form, it increases energy intake and reduces desire of food consumption. This process contributes to weight loss and reduction of binge-eating habits.

Exclusionary criteria for phentermine includes pregnant or breastfeeding, history of severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, glaucoma, extreme agitation or nervousness, use of MAOI inhibitor, and/or a history of drug abuse.

• Lipotropic B12 (Methionine-Inositol-Choline-Cyanocobalamin): a combination of vitamins/amino acid that target release of fatty deposits from the body by stimulation of the liver caused by inositol. Choline prevents accumulation of cholesterol to artery walls which lessens the chance to develop atherosclerosis. Methionine is an essential amino acid that enhances the efficiency of inositol and choline, and Cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) stimulates the metabolism leading to an effect of boost in energy.

• Fat Loss Cream (Glycyrrhetinic acid & Aminophylline): Glycyrrhetinic blocks the availability of cortisol in fat cells resulting in fat loss, and Aminophylline inhibits cAMP breakdown that is in charge of regulation of glycogen, sugar and lipids. This is a topical cream used as a fat reduction to "troubled" areas on the body. However, individuals find most effective use on waist with reports of 11 cm reduction in circumference within 12 weeks. 

• GOAL (Glutamine, Ornithine, Arginine & Lysine): a combination of amino acids blended together in an injection form utilized for weight loss and endurance. Glutamine improves immunity, aids in cellular repair, healing and intestinal health. Ornithine helps improve strength, power and speed while managing fatigue by stabilizing energy levels further promoting better sleeping patterns. Arginine is known to support blood vessel tone while boosting nitric oxide levels. Lysine promotes weight loss and supports the digestive system by using its fatty acids to burn calories resulting in an increase source of energy within the body. 

• Metformin:  inhibits the production of glucose in the liver and reduces insulin resistance to promote absorption of sugar more effectively within the cells.

Exclusionary criteria for metformin includes severe kidney disease, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis.
